Miles Cullen (Elliott Gould) is a mild-mannered bank teller who leads a quiet, rather dull life, and finds joy only in his passion for tropical fish. When his bank branch is held up by a psychopathic robber, Reikle (Christopher Plummer), Miles fools the thief into thinking he only has a meagre amount of cash in his drawer, stashing a large wad of money for himself. As his talent for larceny quickly comes to the fore, Miles manages to seduce the robber's girlfriend and win the affections of his bank manager's mistress. But when Reikle discovers Miles' indiscretion, he threatens to destroy everything in Miles' life.
