A Film by Jean-Luc Godard

How do we learn? What do we know? Night after night, not long before dawn, Patricia (Juliet Berto) and Emile (Jean-Pierre Léaud) meet on a sound stage to discuss learning, discourse, and the path to revolution. Scenes of the May ’68 student revolts, the Vietnam War, posters, photographs, and cartoons form the backdrops to their words, which themselves are often their subject, as are images, sounds, and juxtapositions. Based loosely on Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s incendiary treatise, Émile, or On Education, Godard’s Le Gai Savoir or The Joy of Learning is a montage, a meditation, a reflection on ideas—and how filmmaking is a path.

Quotes

"In this time of increasingly personal cinema, the films of Jean-Luc Godard make those of most of his contemporaries look about as original and individual as monogrammed Volkswagens... it is one of Godard's most beautiful, most visually lucid movies." THE NEW YORK TIMES

"It's not easy going, but it does establish many concepts essential to an understanding of late Godard." CHICAGO READER

"Represents a milestone in his career." SENSES OF CINEMA
