BEHIND THE FORBIDDING WALLS OF THE TINIEST STATE ON EARTH

Portraying everyday life inside the Vatican has been practically impossible up to now. But in this light-hearted two-part documentary, viewers are taken on an exclusive tour behind the forbidding walls of the tiniest state on earth. From the kitchens to the workshops, from the Vatican's fire department to its very own farm, the filmmakers capture the industriousness and cheer of those who work behind the scenes to keep Vatican City running smoothly.

Episode 1 – An Easter Lamb

The time leading up to Easter is a very busy one at the Vatican. This episode shows what’s involved in preparing for this important occasion, with interviews with the firemen, gardeners, and even the artists who repair the ageing mosaics on the cathedral walls.

We look at security and the Popemobile, as well as the seamstresses who sew the Pope’s sheets and curtains.

Just before Easter a truck brings a present from Holland, a huge array of spring flowers, which are laid out in St Peter’s Square. There is a dress rehearsal for the Easter Mass and in the traditional ceremony on Easter Sunday the Pope blesses the assembled faithful. Afterwards the Holy Father retires to his summer residence, Castel Gandolfo, by helicopter.

Episode 2 – A Christmas Story

This episode takes us on a tour behind the scenes and introduces us to some of the people responsible for the preparations involved leading up to Christmas.

We are introduced to Sister Agar who designs the Pope’s vestments. She displays two chasubles that she has designed on the computer. In the Vatican Gardens the florists are busy preparing the floral decorations for St Peter’s, and the Sistine Chapel Choir School young choristers are rehearsing their part in the Midnight Mass.

We also view the unveiling of the Nativity Scene in St Peter’s Square next to the giant Christmas tree from Calabria.
