MADMAN MSPAINT CHALLENGE ART COMP ROUNDUP
We were amazed at the quality work in this latest competition! Inspired by our Classic 80's Toons releases, we asked the Fanzone artists to paint their favourite classic cartoon characters, but with one restriction:
They had to use MSPAINT! With only the use of primitive tools, some impressive and creative pieces using classic characters came to light.
Judging competition was SOOO difficult. 92 entrants across 4 gallery pages and every single page had 2 or 3 contenders at least. We pared it down to about 20 we felt were like our own children, and then carefully culled from there.
Read on for our winners and honorable mentions!
Winner
Porco Rosso - The Game by puggdogg
This piece really crept up on us. The more we pored over our selections, the further up our lists it went, through creative execution of the idea, puggdogg's depiction of Porco Rosso as he may have been seen in a classic aerial shootemup game has duly won us over. The wonderful attention to detail, from the level scenery to the life meters and onscreen displays led to this being a convincing winner!
puggdogg wins 1st prize of a $150 Madman store voucher!
Second Place
Sakura in Paint by mishelly
This is one classy piece of work. Mishelly could have convinced us that this was produced in a professional program, but she's recreated her favourite from Cardcaptor Sakura in Paint thanks to pure skill in linework, adding detail through crosshatching, making for a bright, clean piece.
mishelly wins 2nd prize of a $100 Madman store voucher!
Third Place
Dragonball tribute by The Jin
Working to the strengths of paint, The Jin has Goku and Shenron from Dragon Ball simply represented in bright, flat colour, making use of strong lines and designed the layout so well that everything fits clearly and cleanly for a very energetic and impressive image.
The Jin wins 3rd prize of a $75 Madman store voucher!
Fourth Place
Gaara of the BLAND by McLovin
With a quirky, unique style of his own, McLovin has proven he is of age with this cool take on Gaara from Naruto. Stark strong lines and simple colours, it's all about the odd shape and expression, with fitting use of the trusty spraypaint tool. Also very impressive, McLovin submitted FOUR other great pieces with Domo kun, ATHF, Paper Astro and The Katamari Prince
McLovin wins 4th prize of a $50 Madman store voucher!
Honorable Mentions
There were again so many good pieces out of the many wonderful entries that we wanted to highlight some more strong pieces. All of these honorable mentions will receive a surprise DVD!
voltron profile by Channandeller
A stoic Voltron, masterfully rendered by top regular Channandeller. We loved the battle scars and subtle detail combined with stark simplicity - a great piece
Pikachu vs Spearow by Kazu-Kei
Another strong contender, this impressed us with the dynamics of the scene, Pikachu preparing to face off against a pack of Spearows, who all look fantastic with cleverly gradiated colours.
Spirited Away by Rukaria
We did a double take when we first saw this piece, a really amazing rendering of Chihiro and Haku in dragon form - the driving rain and cherry petals are mightily impressive details to include.
She-Ra and Swift Wind by AJchan
Like Voltron, She-Ra is another core classic character we were glad to see, and the fine coloured line detail by AJchan on this piece makes her look fittingly like an 80's game sprite.
stimpy9 by APE
Looking suitably crazed, APE has done a wonderful job with Stimpy here, sickly expression, queasy details like the armpit hair and the psychotropic gradiated background - as gritty as gritty kitty litter!
Supreme Kai and Kibito by Corad
Another in a frankly incredible run of great Dragon Ball Z themed images, Corad impressed us with this piece thanks to the wonderful layering of background details... the little village Kai is flying over here could easily be part of an Japanese RPG. For fantastic composition, check out this great Piccolo piece Corad also entered.
Fullmetal Alchemist by kanazuchi92
Speaking of old games, this great poster-style piece of Ed and Al from FMA reminds us of classic point and click adventure games. Great character linework, backed by excellent background colouring of the sunset, giving it that oldschool feel.
princess mononoke by yo
One of the early pieces in the comp, we knew we were in for a treat with this great portrait by Yo. The detail and color grading is excellent, and the spirit in Mononoke's eyes is captured brilliantly.
Jubei Batting by kalgeo
The simplicity of this piece has worked to its advantage, with Ninja Scroll's Jubei looking iconic in the computer desktop sense, and as well put by the artist "Jubei is such a classic samurai character and he's awesome even with MS paint :)"
Sailor Jupiter by Nezumi
An impressive piece for the amount of dense atmospheric detail. Sailor Jupiter is breaking out of a storm of pixels, looking determined and deadly. Nice work getting the effect of the lighting and flowing hair.
Popeye Classic by Howl
Another great little piece that nailed the line a colours of a simple piece to work to the strengths of MSPAINT and its a great representation of a classic character - Howl was eating the spinach!
Orihime Pop Art Paint by telku
Uniquely, telku gave a welcome nod in this comp to Andy Warhol with this sweet popart piece, the high contrast style working perfectly.
Lupin and Fujiko by turducken
Last but not least, turducken's rendition of one of our favourite rogues, Lupin, is lovingly created, cheesecake and cheesy grin included, with groovy background really strengthening the timeline of the character.
