Martin Scorsese is generally acknowledged as the greatest American filmmaker of his generation. One of the first directors of the so-called Film School generation, Scorsese made his mark with New York-based Italian Catholic narratives, achieving critical and commercial success with Mean Streets, Raging Bull and Goodfellas, among others. But it was only in 2007 that Scorsese was recognised with his first Oscar® for The Departed.
