Olmi (The Tree of Wooden Clogs) starts the journey with an ageing biochemist leaving Vienna, whose reveries about the joys of love are kindled by a snippet of music. Next, Kiarostami (Taste of Cherry, Ten) takes us through the Italian countryside as the patience of a young man is tested by the almost-comic resilience of a general's widow, and finally, Loach (Kes, Sweet Sixteen, Ae Fond Kiss...), in typical style, tells of a trio of Celtic fans who find out more about modern Europe than they expect as they arrive in Rome.
