Design a Tee Winners Interview: Octo & Robo now available!
The Design a Tee winning entries are now available for purchase from our website at just $24.95! Congratulations again to Scott & Dave for their great designs, read below to find out how they did it!
Name: Scott Bartlett a.k.a. cronobreaker
Age: 2two
Schooling: Graphic Arts at Swinburne TAFE Prahran.
Occupation: Currently working as a Toy Designer/Illustrator/Graphic Designer for a Melbourne based company.
What is your favourite Anime: I’ve never been tied down to one, though Cowboy Bebop was a fantastic series!
What does your tee design say about Otaku: The Octopus girl is supposed to be using her tentacles to collect different elements of Japanese culture. Much like the obsessive nature that is supposed to be an Otaku.
What technique/equipment did you use to create your design: I always start off by sketching everything freehand, then scan it in and play around with it using Illustrator CS and my trusty Wacom Tablet.
What websites would you recommend to people who are interested in tee Design: Threadless.com is probably the biggest and easiest to use, but beware! The users can be pretty harsh with their comments!
Name: David Piper
Age: 25
Schooling: Bachelor of Contemporary Arts (Media Arts)
Occupation: Artist
What is your favourite Anime: Princess Mononoke (But really anything by Miyazaki-san)
What does your tee design say about Otaku: I really wanted to show the merging between the fantasy world and reality. Otaku get so involved in the stories and the lives of characters that they might as well be real. And who doesn’t want a giant robot as a friend!
What technique/equipment did you use to create your design: I drew a couple of sketches just to get my idea and composition right, then did my final artwork with pencil and inked with black pen. Then I scanned the image and coloured in Photoshop.
What websites would you recommend to people who are interested in tee design: I don’t really know any websites, but I’d recommend keeping a sketchbook with you all the time, so when you see something cool and inspiring, you can draw it on the spot!

The best answer, as judged by our panel of futurists will win!
Friends of Otaku
Store Profile: Shin Tokyo
We recently had a chat with Will from Shin Tokyo. Shin Tokyo? I hear you say, why it’s only one of the best stores for anime merchandise in the known universe! Read on to find out why.
How long have you guys been around?
Shin Tokyo has been specialising in Anime, Manga and Video Games for 6 years. Originally formed to design and manufacture Giant Robots, we sort of got sidetracked.
Where are you?
Shin Tokyo has recently moved to a bigger and better location. You can find us just off Rundle Mall in the lower ground of Rundle Mall Plaza. There is a map on our web site www.shintokyo.com.au
What do you offer?
We stock a massive range of Anime, Manga and associated collectables. With a larger premises we now have room for the full range of Otaku Wear. Due to overwhelming demand we have also started stocking the best Video Games releases from Australia and around the world.
What first attracted you to Anime and Manga?
Awesome visuals, interesting characters and a good story will get us every time. With so many genres to choose from you can find something for anyone.
What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen an Otaku do?
Funny can often be replaced by strange, odd or even sad. We have seen more than our fair share of hairy guys cosplaying as chicks. But really this one has to go to a customer that told us he had been living on 2 minute noodles to save for more Gundam kits.
What’s your favourite piece of Otaku Wear?
Shin Tokyo loves anything to do with Mechs. You can’t go past the Tachikoma Tshirt, we loved this one.
What do fans ask for that we don’t do?
Life-size Pokemon!? Nah, just kidding. An awesome line of Bleach merchandise. Or dare we say, some cosplay costumes!?
