Celebrating the return of Initial D, we’re continuing the theme of Stagefright with the art competition. We asked for a variety of takes, from personal stories of the artist’s own big challenge, or favourite moment from an anime where a character faced a major challenge.
If you want to flip the script, you could show what happens if a character were to back down from their big moment. What would happen then? How did their lives change?
Read on for our winners and honorable mentions!
Winner
A wonderfully creative response to the idea of “Stagefright”, kalgeo is not only sharing her own personal fear – of sharp, ominous needles, but has used an original idea to express just how much. By drawing herself as a scared figure clinging to a real life pencil, being pulled to the needle by a real life hand, it shows just how small she felt – but is the big bent needle showing she’s resisting its power?
kalgeo wins 1st prize of a $150 Madman store voucher!
Second Place
Shinji Spooked by Asuka by Death@Noon
You can feel the “rabbit in the headlights” fear on Shinji’s face as he cowers in the corner before a haughty Asuka! His look of worry and confusion is priceless and a fits him perfectly. The mood of a late night visit thanks to the dim grey room pierced by the light from the door left ajar.
Death@Noon wins 2nd prize of a $100 Madman store voucher!
Third Place
It was hard to go past this piece simply for the amazing artwork. Rukaria has shown us many beautifully structured and coloured artworks, but the colour design in this one creates a great atmospheric look that blends the realistic brick texture in the background to the clean character work, and the stunned expression on Kida is definitely on the Stagefright theme.
Rukaria wins 3rd prize of a $75 Madman store voucher!
Fourth Place
A great comedic piece, davetec shows even the biggest baddest villains have to give themselves a bit of a pep talk now and then! Bowser in front of his studio mirror is hilarious and speaks volumes right away about whether he’s feeling a bit of Stagefright!
davetec wins 4th prize of a $50 Madman store voucher!
Honorable Mentions
There were again so many good pieces out of the many wonderful entries that we wanted to highlight some more strong pieces. All of these honorable mentions will receive a surprise DVD! This month it’s a very special Initial D 4th Stage Collection 1
Stagefright! Maka+Soul vs The Legendary Werewolf by Ergo-1
An awesome confrontation from Soul Eater, with the threat of the Werewolf eminently shown by his threatening pose and the determination on Maka’s face showing she and Soul are up for the challenge, amazing depiction by Ergo-1
A very amusing piece, showing what would have happened to Luffy if he had have given in to fear and backed away from the chance to become a pirate on the high seas. This comic may prove a warning to take those opportunities in life!
Another great comic, with a truly apocalyptic vision – what if the Colonel never challenged the Clown’s domination in fast food? McDomination! The detail in this horrifying world is impressive, and we at Madman can literally feel the suffering Bijoux has cheekily depicted in this close up image of the action.
Revy’s stage fright by inuchobitfreak
What would cause Revy, the tough, two-hands and two guns mercenary, to get a bit nervous? Why, having to go against the grain and wear a feminine dress! Her embarrassment is clear, as is the potential for sudden anger!
