4 Elusively Influential Anime Dads

Not all fathers are equal, and anime is a fine example of the extremes of the paternal spectrum. This Father’s Day weekend, we’re revisiting a handful of dads (and one granddad) who inspired action from their kin in strange ways…

Ayaka Uehara’s father | How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?

When you hail from a family of boxers, chances are you’re going to be well-versed in the art of jabs, swings and lightning-fast reflexes.

Ayaka Uehara’s father founded the Glory Boxing Gym, and though she’s adamant that she only boxes because of her father’s gruelling training regimen from her younger years, she’s a gifted boxer in her own right.

Thanks to the rigorous schedule instilled in her, Ayaka’s peak physical fitness and kinetic vision means she can even perform the coveted “Dragon Flag” with ease… yeah, we’ll sit this one out.

Ging Freecss | Hunter x Hunter

Definitely not saying that Ging is the type of father to aspire for… but he’s certainly a memorable one. You could easily mistake him for an older version of his son Gon, with that iconic ‘do, pint-sized stature, and defiant gaze…

Father and his kin both reel in the “Master of the Swamp” – albeit twenty years apart – and despite being abandoned by his dad, Gon is hellbent on discovering the allure of becoming a  Hunter that caused his father to walk out on him.

Pre-order Hunter x Hunter Part 1 (Eps 1-26) (Blu-ray) here.

Gen Kudo | Kono Oto Tomare! Sounds of Life

A troubled delinquent, Chika was taken in by his grandfather, Gen Kudo, a koto maker who tirelessly worked in his shop, crafting the charming musical instrument.

Spending most of his earlier years covered in bruises from reckless fights, the feisty Chika eventually gravitates towards the koto instrument because of his grandfather’s influence and, ultimately, his legacy.

When he eventually joins the Tokise High School Koto Club, he’s determined to prove himself… but first he needs to decipher the koto music charts!

Kodai Arima | Yu-No: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of This World

Bizarre catastrophes are happening around student Takuya Arima, but when his historian father, Kodai Arima, disappears, things really take a strange turn… of the parallel universe kind.

During the summer, Takuya Arima receives a package, seemingly from his missing father, detailing the existence of parallel worlds. He’s initially sceptical, but once he realises that he’s been given the key to cross-dimensional time travel, Takuya is forced to use this new found tech to unravel the mystery of his father’s whereabouts and find out why those closest to him are keeping secrets.

Will he find his father alive?

Pre-order Yu-No: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of This World Part 1 (Eps 1-13) (Blu-Ray) and Part 2 (Eps 14-26) (Blu-Ray).
