Celebrating 10 Years of Epic Tales From Kodansha Comics

2019 is a big year for Kodansha Comics as they celebrate their 10th anniversary of English publications.

Manga classics such as Akira, The Ghost in the Shell, and Attack on Titan are just a couple of the hit titles released in English thanks to Kodansha USA Publishing. Today, we would like to take the time to highlight some of the Kodansha collection as part of the celebration.

Kicking this off is the classic sci-fi epic, Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo.

Here we have the all-new, complete 35th anniversary hardcover edition of one of the most acclaimed and influential comics of all time. The science fiction epic that changed anime and manga forever is presented in six beautiful hardcover volumes, plus the hardcover Akira Club art book and an exclusive patch with the iconic pill design.

‘In 1982, Kodansha published the first chapter of Akira, a dystopian saga set in Neo-Tokyo, a city recovering from thermonuclear attack where the streets have been ceded to motorcycle gangs and the rich and powerful run dangerous experiments on destructive, supernatural powers that they cannot control. In 1988, the manga was adapted into what was at the time the most expensive animated film ever made, which brought Akira’s influence out of the manga world and onto the global stage. Today, it remains a touchstone for artists, writers, filmmakers, and fans, retaining all the brutal impact and narrative intensity it had when Otomo first unleashed it onto the world.’

Second, we have the kickass story of a cyborg girl – Battle Angel Alita!

Inspiring the American cyberpunk action film by director James Cameron, Battle Angel Alita was released as a manga series by Yukito Kishiro in the ’90s. And after More than a Decade out of print, the original cyberpunk action classic returns in glorious 400-Page hardcover deluxe editions, featuring an all-new translation, Colour Pages, and New Cover Designs!

‘Deep into the twenty-first century, the line between man and machine has been blurred as humans rely on the enhancement of mechanical implants and robots are upgraded with human tissue. In this rapidly converging landscape, cyborg superagent Major Motoko Kusanagi is charged to track down the craftiest and most dangerous terrorists and cybercriminals, including “ghost hackers” who are capable of exploiting the human/machine interface and reprogramming humans to become puppets to carry out the hackers’ criminal ends.’

Next up we have the one of the best selling Mangas of all time, Attack on Titan!

The brainchild of artist Hajime Isayama, Attack on Titan is actually his first and currently on-going series. Winning the hearts of people worldwide, the best-selling manga series which spawned a global phenomenon has sold over 88 million copies. We have a huge range starting with individual issues to special edition box sets that include stickers, extra short stories plus more. Whatever you are craving, we have what you need.

‘Humanity has been devastated by the bizarre, giant humanoids known as the Titans. Little is known about where they came from or why they are bent on consuming humanity. Seemingly unintelligent, they have roamed the world killing off humankind for years. For the past century, what’s left of mankind has hidden in a giant, three-walled city. People believe their 100-meter-high walls will protect them from the Titans, which are 10 to 20 meters tall. But the sudden appearance of of an immense Titan is about to change everything.’

Now comes The Ghost in the Shell, the definitive cyberpunk manga that inspired the internationally acclaimed animated film.

Another Manga that really needs no introduction, The Ghost in the Shell by artist Shirow Masamune tells an epic dystopian tale of politics, technology, and metaphysics. The Ghost in the Shell has been hailed globally as an unmatched visionary work of graphic fiction.
