This is a task is easier said than done and will be sure to polarize fans as the Dragon Ball world boasts some of the best and most iconic villains of any franchise. They range from humorous to terrifying, and while their powers often fluctuate, they all leave a lasting impression. So without further ado, we give you our top ten big bads! But be warned, the greatest enemy of all are the spoilers below!
10. RADITZ – Dragon Ball Z
Raditz was one of the first enemy encounters in Dragon Ball Z. When he landed on earth looking for ‘Kakarot’ (Goku), it took both Goku and Piccolo putting aside their differences to defeat him.
While Raditz may have failed his mission, and every villain introduced after was significantly stronger, he still proved to be a formidable foe for our heroes at the time, and showed us how intense the show could be!
9. COOLER – Dragon Ball Z: Cooler’s Revenge
The older brother of Frieza (we wonder where he will sit on the list...) steps onto the scene to avenge his brother. In his base form, Cooler handles combat with Goku with ease and unlike his brother, can transform more than once! However, he becomes completely outmatched once Goku turns Super Saiyan.
8. DR. GERO – Dragon Ball Z
Dr. Gero was more intelligent than he was powerful. He may have spent the majority of the series running away from a fight, but it wasn’t out of fear- rather, it was a calculative move to secure victory. Although he may have not have won many fights, his legacy lives on as the creator of the Androids, and more terrifyingly…. Cell.
7. JANEMBA – Dragon Ball Z
A demon of pure evil and great power, Janemba is the walking definition of evil.
It took Goku and Vegeta fusing together to form Gogeta to defeat him, but even then, it wasn’t an easy task for our heroes. While he was a tough villain to beat, one of Janemba’s weaknesses was being insulted, always catching him off guard. What an ego.
6. GOKU BLACK – Dragon Ball Super
From an alternative timeline, Goku Black is actually Zamasu (but with a separate identity), who hatches a plan to eradicate all mortals. The combination of having a Kai’s power and a Saiyan’s strength makes Goku Black a terrifyingly formidable foe.
Goku Black also gets a tonne of points for looking pretty cool, Especially in his Super Saiyan Rosé form!
5. MAJIN BUU – Dragon Ball Z
Buu is a serious contender as one of the strongest in the universe – at least in the Dragon Ball Z series. His power is so great, he easily manages to defeat Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta and is the catalyst for Goku reaching Super Saiyan 3 for the first time. What power!
The true terror of Buu’s strength comes from his ability to transform, as well as his malevolent and often changing mental state. He would absorb the warriors as he defeated them, making him deadlier with each transformation.
4. CELL – Dragon Ball Z
The creation of Dr Gero, Cell is the result of a potent mix of DNA from Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo and God knows who else! Once he reached his perfect form, he became seemingly unstoppable.
Cell is arguably one of the strongest villains in Dragon Ball Z, and although he doesn’t quite achieve his goal of destroying the world, his power level paved the way for other villains to come.
3. JIREN – Dragon Ball Super
Participant of the Tournament of Power, Jiren is considered to be the only mortal that a God of Destruction can’t defeat. He’s a man of few words, and places honour and justice above all else – not a trait most villains tend to have!
As his power continues to grow, we wonder if there’ll be someone that can defeat him?
2. BEERUS – Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods
The God of Destruction, Beerus defeated Goku in just two hits. That’s some serious strength!
Armed with Godly Ki and destruction energy, Beerus proves a severe threat to any contender and/or planet…. Mainly because it’s in his job title to destroy. Much like a cat he resembles, he’s also lazy, playful and loves to eat.
While he remains one of the most powerful beings in the Dragon Ball Universe, he has become more respectful and friendly as the series develops. Particularly when there’s food on offer…
1. FRIEZA – Dragon Ball Z
The original big bad. Frieza. AKA the one that.just.never.dies.
Originally thought to be the strongest being that ever was, Frieza destroyed planets and civilizations without breaking a sweat. He was also the one to destroy planet Vegeta. He was the villain to fear – and he relished the fact.
He was the villain that caused Goku to transform into a Super Saiyan for the very first time. While he has been defeated multiple times, he just keeps coming back stronger and stronger. And he does so with the same smug look on his face.
