Hayao Miyazaki to direct his first CG animated short film

His first major project since announcing his retirement from making feature films, Hayao Miyazaki has confirmed he is directing an animated short for the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo. His first animation since completing 'THE WIND RISES' in 2013.

Goro Miyazaki revealed the news about his father at a July 16 talk show event, “Now, Hayao Miyazaki is trying to make a short with CG to screen at the Ghibli Museum.” The younger Miyazaki also said of his father, “He gets bored when his goal is maintaining [the Ghibli Museum], so he needs things to fiddle around with.” Hayao Miyazaki is known for his traditional hand-drawn animation style.

The proposed ten-minute film, featuring a hairy caterpillar, will be created in 3D CGI form, a first for the director, and take an estimated three years to complete. It is unknown at this point whether the film will be available to see outside of the Studio Ghibli Museum.

The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki is out now.
