The January art competition tasked artists with looking back on the year that was, 2009, and choosing their favourite anime of the year. Each piece needed to show a definitive moment from the anime, or create a poster style image that expresses what the anime is all about.
Read on for our winners and honorable mentions!
An astounding poster piece, this crept up the rankings each time we looked over the entries. It expresses Pinkfoxx’s favourite anime moment of the year sharply and clearly, with all the action and drama of the scene found in the one image. The clear linework, colouring and great sense of movement in the foreground against the emotion in the background really worked well.
PinkFoxx wins 1st prize of a $150 Madman store voucher!
RyRy’s dark and determined rendition of Astro Boy, shows us an alternate side to Astro, with these horrific wounds. The moody shading offset with smoke and ominous light from his exposed eye lighting his left side with red, plus the still-fighting pose made it a striking piece.
RyRy wins 2nd prize of a $100 Madman store voucher!
Nice artworkin’, Tex! Taking one of the defining elements of Ponyo, her transformation to human form, Tex’s style here is wonderfully unique. At first looking sketchy and loose, looking more closely reveals through an impressionistic style there’s real design to the forms of the characters and it retains a feeling of movement, great stuff.
Tex wins 3rd prize of a $75 Madman store voucher!
Revy Two-Hands, the deadly and just slightly unhinged star of Black Lagoon, here is suffering from the summer heat after shooting up her air conditioner! A great job to create a scene that tells the whole story in the image, and stood out visually with the superb attention to lighting that made it feel like an anime cel.
Corz I Can wins 4th prize of a $50 Madman store voucher!
There were again so many good pieces out of the many wonderful entries that we wanted to highlight some more strong pieces. All of these honorable mentions will receive a surprise DVD! This month it is PET SHOP OF HORRORS
A striking use of colour and pixel art recreates a favourite Gurren Lagann scene in dreamlike style
Succeeds in channelling the style of the Naruto manga with a great cover piece, great use of colour and shadow to give it life.
Conveys the sense of being underwater as well as the painted background style of Ghibli in this immediately recognisable scene from Ponyo.
Another take on this key moment in Gurren Lagann, particularly notable for the understated colouring style really lifts the piece.
