Hiya all.
Dr. Tan here again! I’ve just come back from Supanova Brisbane and it was FANTASTIC! Val Kilmer (Batman), Christopher Lloyd (Dr Emmet Brown, Back to the Future) were just some of the stars, but of course, the main event was the Madman National Cosplay Championship (MNCC) Finals!
The event saw teams and individuals from all over the country come together and give their best in both costume production and stage performance. What a fabulous show it was! The judges, audience and everyone else who was there (myself included) were amazed by the level of skill and production that went into everyone’s costumes and shows. Here is a quick summary of what went down in this year’s finals.
Literally kicking off the show, QLD finalist Melanie performed a scene from Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes. Complete with villains, fight scenes and a moving Honda Tadakatsu robot!
Following, the finalist from SA, Miss Olli appeared on stage with a beautiful white lace and tulle costume from Jellyfish Princess. She wowed all with the beauty and detail of her costume.
While we waited for the next performance, MC John spoke to wildcard finalists Twinklee and Vel’ithya who unfortunately had to drop out at the last minute. Meanwhile, judges Sly, Will (2010 MNCC Winner), and K all went into “Gendo” mode.
Next up was Yiji, showing great narrative skill and imagination performing her own creation in a mix of Harry Potter and GrimGrimore as she fought her adversaries with spells and conjured up a dragon.
Wildcard finalist Desert Rose came on to stage and performed a piece from Dokuhime. The highlight was when she emerged from a transformation sequence and oxygen levels in the room took a nose dive as the crowd collectively gasped in awe and wonder of her transformed persona and costume on stage.
Between the performances, the audience were treated to short bio videos that introduced each and every contestant. These videos allowed everyone to know a little more about the fantastic performers they were watching and were great crowd pleasers.
NSW finalist Kenny was next on stage performing what he called his ‘Dream Cosplay’. Which was a scene from FF12. Kenny played two characters, one on stage, and another being projected in the background. That armour was something else! On a sad note as Kenny announced his retirement from the cosplay circle and the crowd made a collective “awwwww”.. You’ll be missed by all Kenny!
The penultimate then arrived on stage and everyone was spell bound by a fully animated wolf puppet. This was the opening stage of WA finalists and eventual WINNERS, Risachantag and Rallamajoop in an Okami performance. All I can say is their performance was amazing, including choreographed fight scenes, great visuals, and of course excellent costumes. Also, that wolf puppet was awesome!
The final performance was by wildcard finalists Endless Blaze performing an epic cosplay from Castlevania. Again there was another spectacular transformation which also include breakable props and stage settings.
Well, that’s it for the MNCC 2011. Congratulations again to Risachantag Rallamajoop on the fantastic costume and performance.
Be sure to check out the gallery for more pictures from the event and see the fantastic cosplay.
And watch this space for MNCC 2012!
