Madman National Cosplay Championship 2017 Announced!

As we roll into a new year, Madman Entertainment will once again be in search of Australia's most talented cosplayers to compete in the Madman National Cosplay Championship 2017. With some new exciting changes, see what we have in store for 2017!

Welcome to the 9th annual Madman National Cosplay Championship! With one of the widest entry fields in 2016, we plan on expanding this even further with new rule changes that will affect finals contestants and more.

Preliminary Rounds

For the first time in the Madman National Cosplay Championship, we will be including Tasmania as a full participant in #MNCC17, with the winner of the round getting the same flight and hotel privileges as all other rounds!

With the introduction of the new Madman Anime Festival destinations in Perth and Brisbane, we will also be making some adjustments to entry rounds for various states.

Preliminary round dates:

  • Hobart (TAS) @ AI-CON March 4
  • Perth (WA) @ Madman Anime Festival March 4
  • Melbourne (VIC) @ Supanova Expo April 29
  • Brisbane (QLD) @ Madman Anime Festival June 10
  • Sydney (NSW) @ Supanova Expo June 17
  • Adelaide (SA) @ AVCON July 22
  • Auckland (NZ) @ Overload NZ September (TBC)

As noted above, there will be changes to the dates and partner events for 3 out of the 7 preliminary rounds in 2017, so please check accordingly for your entry round of choice.

The format of the rounds will remain the same as 2016 and will require that all contestants compete in a costume that has not competed in other contests and must also be original costumes created by the entrant.

Finals changes

The biggest changes will come with the finals in 2017. Firstly, for the first time since the very first Madman National Cosplay Championship in 2009, we will be hosting the finals in Melbourne as part of Madman Anime Festival – November 4-5, 2017.

Secondly, there will be a change to the eligible costumes and skits that can be used in the finals. For the first time, we will be allowing contestants who win each preliminary round to choose from the following options for their finals costume:

1. Re-use the same winning costume, modifications allowed with the same skit.
2. Re-use the same winning costume, modifications allowed, with a new skit.
3. Construct a new costume with a new skit.

This means that contestants may choose to go all out on just one costume and take that all the way through to the finals event. The choice to participate in the same or new costume will be determined by the finalist in their submission of portfolio for the finals.

More to come

Entry to the championship is now open! Please check the full terms and conditions before entering, and as always we will be giving away a lot of prizes throughout the year including:

$5,700 in Madman Entertainment Vouchers
Flights and hotels for all finalists to Melbourne, as well as entry into Madman Anime Festival

Of course, the grand prize of a trip for 2 to Japan with 2 economy flights, 7 nights hotels and Japan railpass are still up for grabs.

We are also looking for prize sponsors, so if your company is interested in sponsoring the Madman National Cosplay Championship, please do not hesitate to email cosplay@madman.com.au.
