Mamoru Hosoda’s New Film ‘Mirai of the Future’ is Coming to Theatres in 2018!

New information, official release date and teaser footage announced for Hosoda's new film, "Mirai of the Future".

At a press conference in Japan today, Director Mamoru Hosoda, joined by Producer Yuichiro Sairo from Studio Chizu, the Nippon Television Network and Yohann Comte on behalf of Charades, revealed new details and a sneak peak at his upcoming animated film, “Mirai of the Future“.

An announcement on the official Studio Chizu Twitter and the official film website have revealed a poster for the new film, and the release date.

The tagline of the poster read, “I met in the future.”

The film will follow the story of a 4-year old boy, Kun-chan, who is struggling with the arrival of a new little sister, Mirai, in his family. Feeling that his new sister has stolen all his parent’s love from him, he encounters an older version of Mirai, who has journeyed from the future to find him.

This description of the film differs slightly from one that was released earlier this year, where Kun-chan himself travels back in time to meet his mother as a child.

Hosoda will be returning to direct his film with Studio Chizu, and is also credited as scriptwriter for the film. Hiroyuki Aoyama, animation director for earlier Hosoda films such as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and  Summer Wars, and Ayako Hata, a key animator for Hosoda’s films, will be animation directors for Mirai. Yohei Takamatsu and Takashi Omori will be joining them, along with Producer Yuichiro Saito also returning.

Here is our first sneak peak look at Mirai of the Future!

Mirai of the Future is set to be released in Japan in Summer, on the 20th of July 2018.

In a interview with Variety in May, Hosoda discussed the themes of the new film: Siblings, Family, Motherhood and Fatherhood, similar to his previous films. Hosoda also stated that Mirai is inspired by his own experience as a father, noting that the name Mirai is both the name of the title character and his own daughter. the new film will be closer to the ‘human drama’ of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, rather than the action stories his latest films such as The Boy and The Beast and Summer Wars have been.

As we are massive fans of Hosoda’s work and can’t wait to see this brand new film by a brilliant director!’
